Car hiring scheme across Haringey
A new car club scheme, which enables members to hire a Volkswagen Golf, Polo or Transporter van on a pay-as-you-go basis, is now in operation across Haringey, providing access to 27 car club vehicles on 14 on street locations.
The streets involved in the scheme, are Church Road N6, Cranbrook Park N22, Cromwell Avenue N6, Denton Road N8, Hillside Gardens N6, Langham Road N15, Mafeking Road N17, Priory Gardens N6, Springfield Avenue N10, Tariff Road N17, Terront Road N15, Tottenham Lane N8, Victoria Road N4.
Membership costs £59.50 per year, and users can take a vehicle from as little as 30 minutes, to longer periods of up to six months.
Annual membership can be bought at www.streetcar.co.uk or by calling their customer services phone line on 0845 644 8475. In celebration of the launch, Streetcar is offering Haringey residents £20 driving credit when they join, simply quote Hgy30 when joining to receive credit.
Once paid up, residents will get the use of the car without worrying about insuring, taxing and parking. Using this service is also a step towards easing local parking problems and reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the fight against climate change.
Councillor Brian Haley, cabinet member for environment and conservation, said: "This is a great step forward for the many people in Haringey who own cars but rarely use them.
"As well as catering to residents who rarely use their vehicles, we hope the car club will make people think twice before buying a second car for their family,” added Cllr Haley.
The council plans to expand the service with a target of having at least 80 operational car clubs bays by the end of 2010-2011. This will create a borough wide service where every resident and business would be within a five minute walk of a car club vehicle.
