Consultation on Haringey governance system

Posted by news desk in Local News, 11th August 2009, 2:02pm

The final consultation on Haringey Council’s preferred option for new governance arrangements is now underway, and runs until Friday 9 October.

Under the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 local authorities are required to decide between a leader and cabinet arrangement or a directly elected Mayor model. The leader would be elected by councillors for a four-year term.

Councillors from all parties backed the leader and cabinet option at the council last month, and final decisions will be made at a special meeting in December following consultation.

Councillor Lorna Reith, deputy council leader, said: “We have looked into this very carefully, and the unanimous view of councillors from all parties is that the leader model is the best way to secure economic, efficient and effective running of the authority.

”We also consider that it is the option most likely to maintain accountability to the various communities represented by local ward councillors. Now we want to hear what local people think.”
