Local landmarks to open their doors

Haringey landmarks are preparing to welcome hundreds of visitors as they take part in London Open House Weekend.

Twenty buildings and places of interest in the borough are set to join the annual celebration of local architecture on September 19 and 20 - including six Haringey Council owned properties.

Bruce Castle Museum, Coleridge Primary School, Hornsey Town Hall, Hornsey Library, the Triangle Centre and Alexandra Palace have each signed up.

Guided tours will offer a fascinating insight into the history of each of the locations, and give visitors a rare chance to see behind the scenes.

Tottenham’s Bruce Castle Museum, a grade I listed 16th century mansion, will host daily tours, while talks about traditional Tudor falconry will add a touch of nostalgia to proceedings.

Coleridge Primary School will open its new Coleridge East building to the public. The school - housed in the former Hornsey TUC building in Crouch End - opened in September to meet a rising demand for school places in the area.

Hornsey Town Hall and Hornsey Library in Crouch End and the Triangle Centre in Tottenham will also offer guided tours on a first-come, first-served basis.

And Alexandra Palace will once again open its spectacular theatre and television studios to offer visitors an insight into the history of the landmark and its vital role in the early days of communication.

Cllr Bob Harris, cabinet member for corporate resources said: “We’re delighted that so many of our buildings will be involved in Open House weekend.
