Haringey has signed up to a set of shared commitments for European local councils.

The Aalborg Commitments were created in June 2004 and have been signed by more than 600 councils across Europe.

By signing up, cities and towns commit themselves to developing long-term action plans toward sustainability. The ten commitments cover a wide range of themes from protecting and promoting the health and wellbeing of local residents to responsible consumption of resources.

In signing the commitments, Haringey Council has pledged to produce a baseline review of the local situation within 12 months and then coordinate a target setting process prioritising tasks aimed to address all ten commitments.

Councillor Claire Kober, leader of Haringey Council, said: "This set of commitments acknowledges that councils are best placed to influence individual behaviour in local communities. By signing the commitments we can highlight the importance of being careful about what energy we use while furthering our green credentials.”
