Speed guns in Haringey

Posted by news desk in Local News, 23rd February 2010, 4:47pm

Speed guns are to be used across the borough of Haringey by the Safer Neighbourhoods Teams (SNT) to cancel out speeding and unlicensed motorists, the council has announced

The council-bought speed guns will be deployed in areas where speeding has been registered as a problem.  Drivers caught speeding can expect a £60 fine and three penalty points, or be taken to court.

Councillor John Bevan, cabinet member for housing, environment and conservation at the council, defended the decision by claiming it is an effective way of forcing drivers to stick to the speed limits.

He said: “I want these speed guns to send a message to motorists that when they travel in Haringey they should stick to the speed limit or risk prosecution. Too often we see people endangering lives, even near schools, through thoughtless and dangerous driving. I hope these speed guns will make people think twice before speeding in Haringey."

Inspector John Forde of the SNT, added: “Hopefully these guns will remind drivers to keep to the speed limit and where they don't we will take action. Besides curbing speeding, these speed guns will help us pick up people who are committing other crimes, such as driving without a licence or when disqualified, or driving without tax."
Following consultation with residents, the council is also planning to improve the safety and convenience of cyclists and other road users along Muswell Hill’s Cranley Gardens.

The introduction of patterned imprints was the most popular road safety measure coming out of the consultation, and the installation of these, and other safety measures, is to get underway immediately, according to the council.

"I am very concerned about road safety and the council is keen to further reduce all road traffic accidents, whether that involves pedestrians or vehicles. Residents in Cranley Gardens asked us to look at what measures could be introduced here to deal with their problems with speeding traffic,” added Cllr Bevan.
